Apple Unveils the Thinnest Apple Watch Yet: Series 10

Introduction

Apple has just introduced the Apple Watch Series 10, the latest model of the best-selling watch in the world. It is the thinnest ever; with the largest and most advanced screen ever seen on an Apple Watch, this is a new model. Some new features of this model include notifications for sleep apnea, fast charging, and water depth and temperature sensors.

Design and Finishes

The Series 10 comes in both aluminum and titanium, in a range of beautiful colors and finishes. Of particular note, the new jet black polished aluminum finish is sleek and reflective, while the titanium cases, coming in natural, gold, and slate, offer a jewelry-like shine.

Availability

Pre-orders for the new Apple Watch lineup start today, with availability beginning on Friday, September 20.

Impact and Innovations

Jeff Williams, Apple’s chief operating officer, pointed out the many different ways in which Apple Watches have affected the health, safety, and connectivity of their wearers. Emphasizing that Series 10 builds on a decade of innovation, he said that it’s the most advanced so far and made even slimmer and sleeker.

Advanced Features

The Apple Watch Series 10 is roughly 10 percent thinner than every previous model, from Series 7, 8, and 9. But it still allows for up to all-day battery life of 18 hours. It features an innovative metal back that integrates the antenna right into the housing of the device, giving it a seamless, one-piece look.

Performance and Intelligence

The new S10 SiP is designed for a thinner profile coupled with improved performance, power efficiency, and much more intelligence. It features several features like double tap gesture, on-device Siri, dictation, automatic workout detection, Crash Detection, Fall Detection, to name but a few, all of these powered by an embedded 4-core Neural Engine.

Lightweight and Larger Display

Also, the Series 10 is lighter, too: Aluminum cases are up to 10 percent lighter, while titanium cases are nearly 20 percent lighter, than the stainless steel Series 9. The case design features more rounded corners and a wider aspect ratio for a larger display without much larger case sizes of 42mm and 46mm.

Enhanced Display

Compared to Series 4, 5, and 6, Series 10 provides up to 30 percent more active screen area, while compared to Series 7, 8, and 9, it offers up to 9 percent more. This feature will enhance the readability and usability of the watch face, hence allowing users to show more text in apps like Messages, Mail, or News, or increase the font size without cropping. The bigger display will make it easier to perform actions such as composing messages, pausing workouts, or entering passcodes.

Innovative Wide-Angle OLED Display

Innovative Wide-Angle OLED Display The Apple Watch Series 10 is the first in its series to use a wide-angle OLED display, with optimized pixels to pump out more light at wider angles. The result is a screen that can be as much as 40% brighter than the Series 9 when viewed from an angle, and easier to read without having to look directly at it. It’s also more power-efficient, allowing the wide-angle OLED display to refresh faster when it’s in Always-On mode-from once every minute to once every second. That lets you see a ticking seconds hand without rising your wrist-on select faces.

New Watch Faces

WatchOS 11 introduces new watch faces that take advantage of the bigger display and faster refresh on Series 10. The Flux watch face features a bold graphic design with a screen-filling, color-filled pattern that changes second by second. And the Reflections watch face features a shimmering dial that reacts subtly to user’s movements, complementing the reflective quality of the new titanium cases.

Faster Charging

Efficient Charging Coil

It now has a larger, more effectively constructed charging coil that means the new backplate makes the Series 10 the fastest-charging Apple Watch yet. Fifteen minutes of charging provides up to eight hours of normal daily use, or eight minutes of charging powers up to eight hours of sleep tracking. Charge to 80 percent battery in about 30 minutes and make it easier to use throughout both the day and night.

Insightful Sleep Apnea Notifications

Advanced Sleep Tracking

From its compact design and faster charging in the Series 10, it is designed to be comfortable and convenient to use during sleep. The features build on previous health features that track heart rate, respiratory rate, and wrist temperature; a new feature in the Series 10 will help identify signs of sleep apnea.

How It Detects Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a condition wherein one experiences repeated pauses in breathing during sleep, affecting over 1 billion people worldwide. It usually remains undiagnosed. If left untreated, it can heighten the risk of serious health conditions, including hypertension, Type 2 diabetes, and cardiac problems. Using its accelerometer to monitor small wrist movements associated with interruptions in normal respiratory patterns, the Apple Watch measures these with a metric called Breathing Disturbances. These disturbances, though sometimes normal, are abnormal if they happen multiple times through several nights. Users can view their nightly Breathing Disturbances in the Health app as elevated or not elevated and trend them over one-month, six-month, or one-year periods.

Development and Validation

The Apple Watch Series 10’s sleep apnea notification algorithm was created with the most advanced machine learning possible and an immense dataset of clinical-grade sleep apnea tests. It was developed and validated in the largest clinical study ever conducted for sleep apnea technology. Moreover, every participant identified by the algorithm in the study had at least mild sleep apnea.

Regulatory Approval and Availability

The feature is well on track to get FDA and other leading global health authorities’ marketing authorization. Sleep Apnea notifications will support, starting later this month, in more than 150 countries and regions, including the U.S., EU, and Japan.

Depth and Temperature Sensing for Water Activities

Swim-Proof Design

The Apple Watch Series 10 will be great for water activities because it’s designed to be swim-proof, has a 50-meter water resistance rating, automatic stroke detection, and lap counting. They’ll also like the new watchOS 11 offering Custom Workouts during pool swims.

Depth Gauge and Water Temperature Sensor

The new depth gauge will measure down 6 meters beneath the water’s surface, ideal for snorkeling, shallow diving, or playing in the pool, lake, or ocean. Plus, the water temperature sensor also detects the temperature after the watch has become wet. The onboard Depth app is very readable underwater, showing time, current depth, water temperature, time underwater and max depth. It is able to automatically turn on when submerged, and water temperature also appears in your workout metadata for Pool Swim and Open Water Swim exercises.

The New Tides App

Planning and Enjoying Water Activities

The new Tides app in watchOS 11 helps users plan and enjoy open water activities, with seven days of forecasted tidal information for coastlines and surf spots worldwide. It includes details on high and low tides, rising and falling tides, tide height and direction and sunrise and sunset, all plotted against a timeline. Users can view nearby beaches on a map, and new complications reflect current tide information for favorite spots or closest beaches with just a look at.

Oceanic+ App for Snorkeling

Enhanced Snorkeling Experience

Oceanic+ app developed by Huish Outdoors is available on Apple Watch Series 10. The new features allow users to find popular snorkeling locations, view conditions provided by the snorkeling community, and see depth, water temperature, and more during a snorkeling session.

Audio Playback and Voice Isolation

Built-In Speaker Playback

With Apple Watch Series 10, users can now play audio through the built-in speaker. The audio playing will be from Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple Books, and third-party apps directly from the watch.

Voice Isolation for Calls

Series 10 includes a voice isolation neural network running on the 4-core Neural Engine to suppress background noise during phone or FaceTime audio calls. It ensures that, in noisy surroundings, such as busy restaurants, city streets, or other windy outdoor locations, the user’s voice will be clear to the one at the other end .

Sophisticated New Aluminum Finishes and Polished Titanium

Polished Aluminum Finish

For the first time, Apple Watch features a polished aluminum finish in jet black, with a uniquely glossy, reflective shine-achieved through nano-particles and a 30-step anodization process. The Series 10 also comes in updated rose gold aluminum and popular brushed silver aluminum.

Aerospace-Grade Polished Titanium

The Apple Watch Series 10 does without stainless steel from earlier generations and instead introduces aerospace-grade polished titanium. These new grade 5 titanium cases are spectacularly reflective, harking to a finish evocative of jewelry, and are nearly 20 percent lighter than the stainless steel Series 9. The titanium case will come in three nice-looking colors: natural, gold, and slate.

Commitment to Carbon Neutrality

Carbon Neutral Product

Last year, the Apple Watch became Apple’s first carbon-neutral product by significantly reducing carbon emissions across materials, electricity, and transportation and using high-quality carbon credits to offset the remaining emissions. The Series 10 continues this commitment, with cases made from 100 percent recycled aluminum or 95 percent recycled titanium. This is in line with Apple’s ambitious plan to be carbon neutral across its entire carbon footprint by 2030.

Featuring watchOS 11

New Health and Fitness Insights

Apple Watch Series 10, combined with watchOS 11, helps you unlock powerful health and fitness insights through smart personalization that includes:

  • Vitals App: This app lets the users see quickly their key overnight health metrics and provide better context around their health. Users will be notified if there is a result of two or more metrics outside their normal ranges, with additional messaging on how those changes might relate to each other, or other factors like elevation change, alcohol consumption, or illness.
  • Training Load: This shows how changes in intensity and duration, even during a few workouts, affect the user’s body over time, thus helping the users to make informed decisions about their training every day.
  • Customizable Activity Rings: Users can set Activity ring goals for the day of the week, giving them the motivation at the right time. They can also pause their rings without losing award streaks to rest, take care of an injury, or just take a day off .
